Patient/Peer Communication Survey
The ABD streamlined the Component 4 requirements on January 1, 2015. One QI activity must now be completed in the first 5 years of each 10-year MOC cycle and another in the second. Both the Patient Communication Survey and Peer Communication Survey are each optional ways of fulfilling this requirement. However, only one survey may be used to complete the Component 4 requirement in each 10-year MOC cycle (i.e., a traditional quality improvement activity must also be completed instead of two surveys).
Patient Communication Survey
Each survey needs to have a minimum of 20 patient responses and any of your patients can be mailed the survey questions.
If you currently participate in a patient communication survey offered by your institution (for example one administered by a hospital or health plan) that is similar to the MOC Component 4 Patient Communication Survey, we will accept self-reporting of it for this activity as long as it has been approved by the ABMS. Please see our approved survey list to confirm your institutional survey has been approved.
For dermatopathologists and others not involved in direct active patient care, we will accept use of a 360-assessment to include various colleagues and co-workers. An ABD 360 non-direct patient care survey is available at no cost for dermatopathologists.
Peer Communication Survey
Each survey needs to have a minimum of 12 peer responses and at least 6 must be from physicians. The survey questions can be sent to anyone with whom the physician communicates about patients; there are no more specific requirements.
While most large institutions have acceptable patient survey instruments, this is often not the case for peer feedback. Peer credentialing tools are generally not acceptable. However, if you currently participate in a peer communication survey offered by your institution (for example one administered by a hospital or health plan) that is similar to the MOC Component 4 Peer Communication Survey, we will accept self-reporting of it for this activity as long as it has been approved by the ABMS. Please see our approved survey list to confirm your institutional survey has been approved.
