To expand training opportunities in pediatric dermatology a new training track for individuals, who are or will be board-certified or board-eligible in Pediatrics at the outset of dermatology training, is available within select dermatology residency training programs. This training track creates an alternative pathway for individuals who are highly committed to the care of pediatric patients with skin disorders.
This 3-year dermatology residency track, with a pediatric dermatology focus, leads to board certification in general dermatology and is available for applicants who have completed general pediatrics training. A subsequent 1-year pediatric dermatology fellowship is required to become subspecialty certified in Pediatric Dermatology.
Applicant Eligibility
Completion of General Pediatrics residency program with Pediatric board certification/eligibility.
Matching into the Training Track
This training track follows a match process similar to non-categorical dermatology residency positions. Trainees may apply as early as their PGY-2 year in general pediatrics or upon completion of general pediatrics residency.
Candidates apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A separate match number will be used for candidates applying to this track.
Program Requirements
__ A board-certified pediatric dermatologist as a member of the core faculty and clinical competency committee.
__ Formal mentorship program in pediatric dermatology.
__ Ample exposure to pediatric dermatology clinical rotations (outpatient and inpatient).
Program Training Structure
The program will be structured as follows:
Three years will include training in general dermatology core areas (medical dermatology, dermatopathology, dermatologic surgery and pediatric dermatology) to ensure at least minimum training and ACGME requirements.
The pediatric dermatology focus may include the following training modifications:
__ Pediatric Dermatology continuity clinic
__ Increased number of rotations in outpatient and inpatient pediatric dermatology
__ Pediatric dermatology elective(s)
__ Completion of QI project in pediatric dermatology
__ Completion of research or scholarly activity in pediatric dermatology
Scholarly Activities & Educational Conferences
Scholarly activities including research and quality improvement (QI) projects will focus on pediatric dermatology. Attendance to educational activities – in addition to general dermatology meetings such as AAD - will favor pediatric dermatology conferences including the Society for Pediatric Dermatology meetings and the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA) conference.
Fellowship Training
A fellowship in pediatric dermatology is independent from the training track. Trainees who complete the 3-year program will subsequently complete a 1- year ACGME accredited pediatric dermatology fellowship. Trainees will apply for fellowship and participate in the fellowship match as other traditional candidates.
Examinations and Board Certification
In-training exams:
To ensure adequate progression and competency in the field of dermatology, trainees will be required to take the informational BASIC Exam and pass the 4 CORE Exam modules administered by the ABD.
Post-residency exam:
Upon completion of year 3, trainees will be eligible to take the APPLIED Exam for general dermatology certification, administered by the ABD.
Subspecialty exam:
Trainees who successfully complete the 1-year pediatric dermatology fellowship will be eligible to take the Pediatric Dermatology subspecialty certifying exam administered by the ABD.
Board Certification Oversight
This training track follows board certification in line with current general dermatology and pediatric dermatology board certification. The ABD will provide oversight for board certification in General Dermatology and subspecialty board certification in Pediatric Dermatology.
